Westwood Elementary School is a shining example of a school serving a community with diverse needs and interests, bolstered by a strong tradition of volunteerism. Adults are visible throughout the campus, supporting student learning. Students, in turn, give back to the community by entertaining residents, raising funds for service organizations, collecting Valentines and writing letters to deployed troops, and other community service projects. Dynamic partnerships include the Rancho Bernardo Chamber of Commerce, Casa De Las Campanas, a retirement community, Longs Drugs, Wells Fargo Bank, and Time Warner Cable.
Westwood recently completed an extensive modernization program as a result of Proposition U funding. The facility now includes a new multi-purpose room and student lunch area, an upgraded library facility, technology center, 12 new permanent classrooms, and complete renovation of all existing facilities. As a result Westwood is a modern, state of the art school. Westwood has been recognized as a California Distinguished School and a National Blue Ribbon School of Excellence. In 2001 a Chargers Champions Grant was received for innovative character education and student support programs. Students have access to up-to-date technology due to the financial support of the Westwood Elementary Foundation.
